What septic pumping actually does
Everything that goes down a drain in your house ends up in the septic tank. Inside, it separates into three layers:
- Scum floats on top: grease, oils and anything lighter than water.
- Liquid sits in the middle and flows out to the drain field, where the soil treats it.
- Sludge settles on the bottom: solids that bacteria can't fully break down.

How to go longer between pump-outs
The EPA's septic care guidance comes down to a few habits:1
- Only flush toilet paper. Wipes, even "flushable" ones, don't break down in the tank.
- Keep grease and cooking oil out of the sink.
- Spread laundry out over the week instead of doing it all on one day.
- Fix leaking toilets and faucets, which can add a lot of water to the system.
- Don't park or drive on the drain field, and keep trees away from it.
Septic additives aren't a substitute for pumping. Solids still build up and still need to be removed.

Is septic tank cleaning different from pumping?
No. Both describe emptying the tank with a vacuum truck. What matters is that the sludge on the bottom and the scum on top are removed, not just the liquid in the middle.
How do I know what size septic tank I have?
It's often listed on the original septic permit, a home inspection report or a past pump-out receipt. If you don't have any of those, we can usually tell once the tank is open.
Will pumping fix a slow drain field?
Pumping takes pressure off the system right away, and if the tank was simply full, that may be all you need. If the drain field itself is saturated or clogged, pumping is only temporary relief. We'll tell you what we see.
Can a septic tank go 20 years without being pumped?
A tank can go that long without an obvious backup, but that doesn't mean it's fine. After many years the sludge usually fills much of the tank, and solids start washing out into the drain field, which is the expensive part to fix. If it's been that long, have it pumped and ask what the tank looked like.
Do septic additives mean I can pump less often?
No. Solids that bacteria can't break down still build up on the bottom of the tank, so it still needs regular pumping.
